Our story

Oxford Biosciences was founded to make cosmetic safety assessment what it should be: expert scientific judgement, grounded in laboratory evidence and practical experience.

The company was founded in 2013 by Allison Wild, a clinical pharmacologist who had already been working in cosmetic safety science since 2006. From the outset, Oxford Biosciences was built around qualified assessment, direct professional accountability and the integration of safety science with practical laboratory and formulation experience.

What we have done since

Since 2013, Oxford Biosciences has prepared the safety assessments behind more than 63,000 products for over 5,000 brands.

Our clients range from independent formulators and first-time brand founders to established manufacturers and multinational companies. Many first come to us with a single product and remain with us as their businesses grow, their ranges expand and they enter new markets; brands featured on Dragons’ Den and Shark Tank are among them.

Collectively, they have brought us an average of approximately twelve products each, with many relationships extending across complete product ranges and over many years.

The scale has changed considerably since the company was founded. The scientific standard has not.

How we are built

Oxford Biosciences acts as Responsible Person for brands in the United Kingdom, European Union and United States, through Oxford Biosciences companies established in each market: in the UK at the Oxford Science Park, in the EU through our company registered in the Republic of Ireland, and in the United States through our American company.

Our operations work within a common scientific and quality framework, adapted to the regulatory requirements of each jurisdiction. Brands operating internationally therefore work with one organisation and one consistent scientific standard across their principal markets.

We also operate three in-house laboratories supporting the analytical, microbiological and stability work required for cosmetic safety assessment and regulatory compliance.

Keeping this work in-house means that laboratory results pass directly from the scientists who generate them to the assessors who interpret them. The provenance of the data, the methods used to produce it and its relevance to the safety assessment are known throughout the process.

This integration of laboratory science and safety assessment is fundamental to the way Oxford Biosciences operates.

Our standard

Every Cosmetic Product Safety Report is prepared for the individual client and signed by the qualified assessor responsible for its scientific conclusions.

Over more than a decade, Oxford Biosciences assessments have been examined by regulatory and enforcement authorities in the UK and European Union. No assessment has been rejected by an authority on scientific or regulatory grounds.

Accessible by design

Scientific and regulatory rigour should not depend on the size of the brand.

A standard Oxford Biosciences CPSR starts at only Β£70. The same scientific standards apply whether the client is an independent maker bringing a first product to market or an international company managing an extensive portfolio.

Oxford Biosciences was built to make experienced, qualified cosmetic safety assessment accessible at every scale.
